December 14 :: the artist sketchbook

In this month’s workshop, the girls will be learning about an important skill shared amongst artists of all ages across the globe ~ the sketchbook.  It is a place for the hidden thoughts and images of an artist to make their way to paper, to come to life and be recognized.  Making the unseen seen.  Not every entry is important, many are often mundane or quite ordinary.  But all are necessary.

For many artists, the sketchbook is a visual diary, where ideas are affirmed or discarded.  Perhaps through repetition an artist can find clarity and move forward with her inner expression.  For others, sketchbooks are simply a place to play, a place to find some freedom and an escape from the daily routine.

A sketchbook can become a trusted companion.  It is often a place of familiarity and a safe haven to explore thoughts and visions, bringing them to life through simple sketchings, scribbles, words and images.  Artists use a variety of tools ~ pencils, pens, watercolor, mixed media and found objects.  Each sketchbook is a reflection of the artist’s uniqueness.

During the workshop, the girls will also create their own artist pouch to store a variety of pens and pencils and necessary tools to make their sketchbook moments easier.  We will be using fabric paint to stencil monograms or perhaps a favorite image or word; and then a simple sewing activity to bring it all together.  With a sketchbook in hand, and a portable pouch, the girls are set for moments of expressive freedom.<
